Playa Coral is one of the prettiest and quietest beaches in Puerto Escondido- for this it’s probably our favourite! The water is calm, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding regardless of the crowds and weather.
This beach remains a hidden gem, mainly accessed by scrambling over some rocks via Playa Bacocho. Thanks to this, Playa Coral never gets too crowded, no matter the weather or time of day. You can always find a secluded spot to enjoy.
If you’d rather not climb over rocks, you can pay a small fee to the Villa Mexicana Hotel for easier access.
To get the most out of your experience, rent an umbrella and snorkel from reception at Casa Daikiri. This way, you can see the abundant sealife (including the resident turtle population) and then relax on the sand in the shade with a book and a beer.
There are three different ways to get to Playa Coral, and to make it easy, we'll list them from least to most difficult.
Option 1:
The Easiest Way- Taxi/Walk/Collectivo to enter via Villa Mexicana
This is the simplest and costs 50 pesos. While there are some discussions online about the ethics of this route, it’s the quickest and most convenient. Just inform the reception at Villa Mexicana that you want to visit the beach, and they will charge you a 50-peso entry fee. Alternatively, for 120 pesos per person, you can get entry along with a basic hamburger, fries, and a cold bottle of water upon arrival. We love the burger option at Casa Daikiri—it’s a great way to start your beach day.
Option 2:
The second option is to walk from Playa Bacocho, which is a relatively easy way to reach Playa Coral. As long as the tide is low, the walk from Bacocho is quite simple and allows you to visit two of the best beaches in Puerto Escondido on the same day.
To get there, take a colectivo or taxi to the Turtle Release Center, then backtrack to Coral. The walk takes no more than 10 to 15 minutes and is completely free.
Option 3:
If you're up for an adventure, you can walk along the headland from Mirador Las Tortugas to reach Playa Coral. This route takes about 30 minutes and involves some rock hopping, so it's best suited for those who are fit and enjoy a bit of a challenge.
