Zicatela

Playa Zicatela, located in Oaxaca’s beautiful Puerto Escondido, is a massive two-mile stretch of sand famous for its epic surfing and sunsets. This long beach is often considered two separate areas: Zicatela to the north and La Punta to the south.

The northern end of Playa Zicatela, commonly referred to as Zicatela, is a renowned spot for seasoned surfers who come to ride the infamous Mexican Pipeline. These tubular waves can reach up to 20 feet (and sometimes double that!), making it a paradise for experienced surfers but extremely treacherous for beginners!

hill and enjoy the beach atmosphere.

The peak season for the biggest and most powerful waves is during the summer months, typically from May to August, when the town hosts numerous international surf competitions. Intermediate surfers can find slightly smaller yet still challenging waves in April, September, and October.

For those looking to relax, Zicatela's wide and uncrowded coastline offers a perfect spot, though swimming is nearly impossible due to the strong waves. Numerous beach bars provide sunbeds with umbrellas, food, and drinks, making it an excellent place to chill and enjoy the beach atmosphere. For a great explanation check out the incredible short documentary "Place of Thorns".
